Inlays and Onlays in Coquitlam
In some cases, regarding minor instances of tooth decay, our Greenline Dental team will apply dental inlays and onlays to protect the tooth surface from further damage. Inlays and onlays are often considered when the amount of damage present on a tooth does not constitute the need for a larger restoration, such as a complete dental crown or a dental filling. Think of inlays and onlays as protective barriers for your bite.
Inlays vs Onlays
Inlays and onlays offer protection for your tooth’s surface. The primary difference between the two is their shape, depending on how much surface area they cover. If your tooth’s damage is on the top of your tooth or the chewing surface, your dentist may place an inlay between the cusps of the tooth. An onlay will extend to cover the cusps of the tooth as well.
How Inlays and Onlays Work
When your trusted dentist recommends an inlay or an onlay to protect the chewing surface of your tooth, they will start by clearing out the affected tooth tissue to make room for restoration. Next, they will take an impression or digital image of the tooth to use as a reference for creating your custom inlay or onlay. Your dentist will then bond the restoration over the chewing surface, securing protection for years to come.
